Chardham Yatra is a pilgrimage tour that covers the four most sacred places of worship in Hinduism: Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri. The best time to visit Chardham is from April to November, as per the dates declared by the Government of Uttarakhand. During the winter months, the idols from the temples are shifted to their winter shrines.

The Chardham Yatra starts from Yamunotri and covers Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath in the eastward direction. The pilgrimage route typically begins from Haridwar and goes through Rishikesh, Deo Prayag, Tehri, Dharasu, Yamunotri, Uttarkashi, Gangotri, Gaurikund, Kedarnath, Joshimath, and Badrinath.

During the Chardham Yatra, it is advisable to carry emergency medicines, bottled water, food that is boiled, cooked or fried, a mosquito/insect repellent, sunscreen cream, heavy woolens including thermal body warmers, raincoats, sleeping bags, blankets, water-proof shoes with sufficient grip, and a torch. Women are advised to avoid sarees and opt for salwar kameez or trousers. Only registered ponywalla or porter should be hired and shortcuts on the route should be avoided. It is also important to be physically and mentally fit for the journey, which involves trekking at an altitude of 1,400 ft, and to start preparatory exercises at least a month before the yatra.
